Local Race Report: Carbondale Fit Out 5K, 9/17/10

One hundred and twenty-six competitors gathered in Carbondale's beautiful Evergreen Park for the 3rd annual Carbondale Fit Out 5K Run/Walk. The crowd was treated, pre and post-race, to the blues stylings of Jim Skinner's Rhythm and Blues Band. The 6 pm start time provided lovely weather for a sprint around the edge of the SIUC campus. Army ROTC candidates were helpful at three water stations during the race, cheering competitors on and providing water for the racers. After the race, volunteers handed out water, fruit and cookies to an appreciative crowd. Thanks to race sponsors Carbondale Main Street and the Nightlife Entertainment newspaper for a fun tine in the park!

CWR founder Allison Joseph finished 53rd overall and 2nd in the 40-49 age group.

Why a Running Group for Women?

This group will have a very casual low-key approach to running and training. As a still-new runner of less than a year, I realize that running can be very intimidating to many women. I started this group to lessen that intimidation factor for those who would like to try running, but who have always been intimidated by those whippet-lean people you've seen hustling past.

Why the focus on women? I've wanted, for a long time, to have an ongoing relationship with a women's group of some sort. But none of the pre-existing groups felt quite right for me. So I created Carbondale Women Run to fill a void of my own and to reach out to others!

Welcome to Carbondale Women Run

Carbondale Women Run is a women's running group based in in Carbondale, Illinois, with the initial goal of getting as many women as possible to run the Women Together 5K race
on November 13, 2010. This race is a fundraiser for the Carbondale Women's Center.

To train for the race, CWR will hold twice a week low-key run/walk sessions that will follow the Couch to 5K method. These sessions will combine walking with running, with the eventual goal of running the entire 5K (3.1 miles). The run/walk method allows you to build up endurance slowly, so if you haven't run before, this would be a fine way to start. The training runs will also serve to build community among women athletes here in the C-dale area. The training sessions will start at the beginning of October. Each session will be no longer than a half-hour, and will take place around Campus Lake. There will be no fee for the sessions themselves, but each CWR member will pay for her own race registration.
